Getting to Golf Courses from Tokyo

Train and taxi, club buses, driving, and what to do with your golf bag

Quick answer

From Tokyo, take a train to the station listed for your course, then a taxi or a club bus. The station-to-course taxi times on our course pages run from about 10 to 40 minutes, and five of the courses we book near Tokyo are served by a club bus, such as Narashino Country Club’s 10-minute bus from Chiba New Town Chuo Station. We can also arrange a private car with a driver on request.

Which courses near Tokyo run a club bus?

Narashino, Glen Oaks, Oak Hills, Higashi Chiba and Kobuchisawa. Glen Oaks and Oak Hills share one bus, and each club sets its own timetable, so check it again in the week you play.

Not every bus is open to visitors. Narita Golf Club told us in writing in October 2026 that its club bus is for members only. Visitors can take a taxi from Narita Station, about 15 minutes.

Can I reach an early tee time by train?

Sometimes. Work backward from the check-in time, not the tee time: our etiquette guide suggests arriving around an hour early. If you plan to use a club bus, its timetable limits when you can arrive.

Narashino’s first weekday bus leaves the station at 6:50, and the Glen Oaks bus leaves the airport at 8:15. The courses around Mt. Fuji are farther. An early tee time at Fuji Classic can mean a pickup from a central Tokyo hotel around 5 a.m. If the first trains do not get you there in time, ask for a later tee time, a car, or a night near the course.

Can I rent a car and drive to the course?

Yes, with the right documents. Japan’s National Police Agency says drivers without a Japanese license need an International Driving Permit issued by a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention or, for licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the license with a Japanese translation. Either is valid for up to one year from your entry into Japan, within the validity of your license (NPA leaflet).

The NPA’s Q&A adds that a digital permit shown on a phone is not accepted (NPA Q&A), so if you need a permit, get the paper one from an authorized issuer before you travel. A car suits courses whose access is given from an expressway interchange, such as PGM Ishioka. Japan drives on the left, and the same leaflet says never drive after drinking, so anyone planning a beer with lunch between the nines should not be the driver.

Should I book a private car to the course?

It helps with an early start, a course far from Tokyo, or a group carrying golf bags and suitcases. We arrange a car with a driver on request, from your Tokyo hotel to the course and back. Tell us the hotel, the number of people and bags, and the tee time when you send your request.

For the short station-to-course leg, a taxi is usually enough.

How do I get my golf bag to the course without carrying it on the train?

Send it ahead by courier. Yamato Transport’s Golf Takkyubin delivers to the course by the day before play, and you collect the bag at the front desk on the day. Ship no later than two days before play, or three days for some areas, before the cutoff time of the counter you use (Yamato Golf Takkyubin).

Yamato does not accept bags over 30 kg. For shipments to a course, the shipping charge must be prepaid and you cannot choose a delivery time slot.

Sagawa Express also delivers golf bags to the course by the day before play; delivery on the day of play is not available. The service has a 30 kg weight limit and cannot be combined with time-slot delivery (Sagawa golf and ski delivery).

If you would rather not travel with clubs at all, we can have rental clubs delivered to your course. Payment must be confirmed by noon Japan time five business days before use. The options are compared in renting golf clubs in Japan.

Common questions

How do I get from Tokyo to a golf course by public transport?

Take the train to the station listed in the course’s access information, then a taxi or, where the club runs one, the club bus. The station-to-course taxi times on our course pages range from about 10 to 40 minutes. Some course entries list an expressway interchange rather than a station, so check the access details before planning a rail connection.

Which golf courses near Tokyo have a club bus?

Among the courses we book, Narashino Country Club runs a club bus from Chiba New Town Chuo Station with no reservation needed, and Kobuchisawa Country Club runs a free bus from Kobuchisawa Station by phone reservation. Glen Oaks Country Club runs a bus from Narita Airport Terminal 2 at 8:15 that continues to Oak Hills Country Club, and Higashi Chiba Country Club runs a reservation-only bus from Oami Station on weekends and holidays. Timetables are set by each club and can change.

Can I drive to a golf course in Japan with my home license?

Without a Japanese license, you need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention or, for licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the license plus a Japanese translation. According to the National Police Agency, either is valid for up to one year from your entry into Japan, within the validity of your license. Japan drives on the left, and anyone who has been drinking must not drive.

How do I send my golf bag to the course?

Use a golf delivery service such as Yamato Transport's Golf Takkyubin. Yamato asks you to ship no later than two days before play (three days for some areas), before the cutoff time of the counter you use, and delivers to the course by the day before. You collect the bag at the front desk. Bags over 30 kg are not accepted. If you would rather not bring clubs at all, we can arrange rental clubs delivered to the course in advance.

Can Elite Golf Japan arrange a car to the course?
